About Us - Mi'kmawey Forestry

Mi’kmawey Forestry is a revised version of the First Nations Forestry Program that was funded by Natural Resources Canada from 1994-2011. Since then, new funding opportunities have become available to revive the program through numerous sources that include Government agencies, private industry and other non-government organizations. These organizations assist with funding the program, building capacity within the program and providing support to our Communities through scholarships and grants.

Through workshops, training, events and activities, we work with community members on all technical aspects of the forestry sector including sustainable forestry management, habitat and species at risk stewardship, silviculture, conservation, non-timber forest products, and much more. We also provide access to additional forestry resources, services, and liaison with provincial forest improvement opportunities and expertise.

Mi’kmawey Forestry believes in a wholistic forestry approach. Wholistic forestry realizes the importance of Netukulimk: taking only what you need and leaving something for future generations. Wholistic thinking is melded with today’s forestry treatments and management techniques promoting a balance between immediate economic needs, protection of the forest life and maintaining standing forests for our future. The interdependence of all living things and their essential contribution to the health and sustenance of the natural environment is respected and maintained. The philosophy of wholistic forestry does not exclude humans and their interaction with the forest but rather balances human interests equally with the interest of all other components of the forest ecosystem.
