On Monday, November 26th, Hon. Margaret Miller, Nova Scotia’s Environment Minister, made the announcement of three new protected areas in the province.
The first area announced was a 1,954-hectare span in the Wentworth Valley Wilderness Area spanning across both Cumberland and Colchester Counties. This designation was chosen as a prime location for the development of a year-round tourism market.
Also announced were the Chase Lake Wilderness Area, which covers 874 hectares and was designated for it’s Blue Heron nesting sites and the Steepbank Brook Nature Reserve, which covers 202 hectares – for it’s population of Eastern White Cedar, a vulnerable species in Nova Scotia.
